Step-by-Step Permit Application Guide
Follow this comprehensive guide to obtain your Bar Harbor parking permit through the online portal system.
Make sure you have the following items ready:
- Current vehicle registration (must be registered in Bar Harbor)
- Credit card for payment (if applicable)
- Proof of residency or employment (depending on permit type)
Access and Log In
First, you'll need to access the permit portal and log in to your account:
- Go to thepermitportal.com
- Log in with your existing account credentials
- If you don't have an account, click "Register" to create one

Start the Application Process
From your dashboard, begin the application process:
- Click the blue "Apply for Permit" button
- You'll see a "Check Availability" screen where you need to select a location
- From the dropdown, select "BH - Resident/Employee Permit Parking Areas" (or another permit type that meets your needs)
- Enter the tentative start date for your permit (it defaults to the current date)
- Choose between the permit options shown
- Click the green "Apply" button next to your preferred permit type

Complete the Permit Purchase Form
Basic Information
- Note: The system shows you can apply for up to 10 permits per application
- Enter the number of permits you need (default is 1)
- Payment Option: Select "Credit Card" from the dropdown
- Auto Payment: Check this box for automatic renewal (required for residential permits)
Address Section
- Your saved address should appear
- If you need to add a different address, click the "+ ADD ADDRESS" button
Vehicle Information
- Select the vehicle(s) from your saved vehicles list by checking the box next to each one
- If you need to add a new vehicle, click the "+ ADD VEHICLE" button
- The system requires license plate number, make, model, color, and year for each vehicle
Please be aware that in the "Edit Profile Vehicles" section, the license plates shown do not correspond to your permitted vehicle. To view the correct plate information, please navigate to the Orange Review/Renew button. There, you will find the plate details for the vehicle currently registered under your permit.
Note: Once your employee permit is activated, you are not allowed to switch vehicles.

Document Information
- Upload required documents:
- Current Vehicle Registration in the Town of Bar Harbor (Required)
- Additional vehicle registrations (if applicable)
- Click "Choose File" to upload each document
Submit Your Application
Review all the information for accuracy before submitting:
- Check that all required fields are completed
- Verify that all uploaded documents are correct
- Scroll to the bottom of the form
- Click the blue "Submit" button

Process Payment (if applicable)
For permits that require payment:
- You'll be directed to a payment screen after submitting your application
- Enter your credit card details
- Confirm the payment amount
- Complete the payment process
Payment fees vary by permit type:
- Resident Vehicle Permit: Free
- Employee Vehicle Permit: $30.00
- Non-Resident Property Owner Permit: $75.00
- Commercial Fishing Permit: $5.00
- Bed & Breakfast Permit: $375.00
All transactions may include a small processing fee.
Application Approval
After submitting your application:
- Your application will be reviewed by the town office or parking enforcement
- You'll receive an email notification when your permit is approved
- For approved permits, you can print or save a digital copy from your account
- For Bar Harbor permits, make sure to select options that begin with "BH"
- For residential permits, the auto-renewal checkbox is required
- You must upload proof of vehicle registration in Bar Harbor
- The Resident Vehicle Permit (Summer) is valid until the end of the year
